Description:

Why try when I already know how this ends?

The Failure carries the capacity for learning. In its functional expression, it uses failure as information about what worked, what didn't, and what can be done differently, allowing experience to increase our understanding and capability. When distorted, it can express itself as defeat. In this form, it allows setbacks and failures to become evidence that further effort is pointless, losing the willingness to try again or imagine a different outcome.

When this card comes up in a reading...

Failure may be pointing to an opportunity for learning, or revealing where defeat has taken over. It invites us to consider whether we are allowing setbacks to teach us, adapt our approach, and try again, or allowing failure to define who we are and what we believe is possible.

Upright (Functional)
Theme: Learning
  1. Learning
Uses failure as information about what worked, what didn't, and what can be done differently, allowing experience to increase our understanding and capability.

  2. Adaptation
Adjusts our approach in response to setbacks, changing strategies, expectations, or behaviour rather than repeatedly attempting what isn't working.

  3. Resilience
Recovers from setbacks without allowing failure to define our sense of self or prevent us from continuing to pursue what matters.

  4. Humility
Recognizes that we can be mistaken, limited, or unsuccessful without needing to defend our choices or protect our image, remaining open to feedback and new understanding.

Reversed (Dysfunctional)
Theme: Defeat
  1. Defeat
Allows setbacks and failures to become evidence that further effort is pointless, losing the willingness to try again or imagine a different outcome.

  2. Fear of Failure
Avoids risks, challenges, and unfamiliar opportunities because the possibility of failing feels more threatening than the possibility of growth feels worthwhile.

  3. Identification with Failure
Turns “I failed” into “I am a failure,” allowing unsuccessful outcomes to define our sense of worth, competence, and what we believe is possible for us.

  4. Defiant Failure
Deliberately or unconsciously chooses failure as an act of rebellion against authority, refusing to succeed because success feels like surrendering to the expectations, demands, or control of parents or other authority figures.
