Theme:
Belonging
Description:

If I remain faithful, I will belong.

The Loyal carries the capacity for steadfastness. In its functional expression, it remains committed to the people, principles, and responsibilities that matter to us, staying true to them through difficulty, uncertainty, and changing circumstances. When distorted, it can express itself as conformity. In this form, it suppresses our own preferences, perspectives, or individuality in order to align with the people or groups to whom we feel loyal, allowing belonging to take precedence over being true to ourselves.

When this card comes up in a reading...

The Loyal may be pointing to a need for faithfulness, or revealing where blind loyalty has taken over. It asks us to notice whether our loyalty reflects a conscious commitment to what matters to us, or keeps us bound to people, beliefs, or situations long after they have ceased to deserve it.

Upright (Functional)
Theme: Steadfastness
  1. Steadfastness
Remains committed to the people, principles, and responsibilities that matter to us, staying true to them through difficulty, uncertainty, and changing circumstances.

  2. Reliability
Follows through on our commitments and can be counted on when needed, allowing others to trust that our words and actions are consistent.

  3. Allegiance
Stands with the people, groups, principles, or causes we have consciously chosen, offering our support without abandoning our own judgment or values.

  4. Trustworthiness
Honours confidences, agreements, and commitments, protecting the trust others place in us even when breaking that trust might be easier or personally advantageous.

Reversed (Dysfunctional)
Theme: Conformity
  1. Conformity
Suppresses our own preferences, perspectives, or individuality in order to align with the people or groups to whom we feel loyal, allowing belonging to take precedence over being true to ourselves.

  2. Blind Loyalty
Remains committed to a person, relationship, group, or belief even when we recognize that something is harmful or wrong, because questioning it feels like betrayal.

  3. Compromised Integrity
Overrides our own values or inner knowing when they conflict with what loyalty demands, choosing allegiance over what we believe to be right.

  4. Resistance to Separation
Finds it difficult to outgrow or leave relationships, groups, roles, or beliefs that once provided belonging, experiencing change or independence as disloyalty.
