Theme:
Faithfulness
Description:

I need you to need me.

The Co-Dependent carries the capacity for interdependence. In its functional expression, it recognizes that healthy relationships involve both giving and receiving, balancing our own needs with the needs of others while maintaining our autonomy. When distorted, it can express itself as people-pleasing. In this form, it becomes preoccupied with gaining approval and maintaining connection, continually adjusting ourselves to meet the perceived needs and expectations of others.

When this card comes up in a reading...

The Co-Dependent may be pointing to a need for interdependence, or revealing where dependency has taken over. It invites us to consider whether we are participating in relationships with mutual support and healthy boundaries, or becoming responsible for others in ways that compromise our own autonomy and sense of self.

Upright (Functional)
Theme: Inter-Dependent
  1. Interdependence
Recognizes that healthy relationships involve both giving and receiving, balancing our own needs with the needs of others while maintaining our autonomy.

  2. Faithfulness
Remains loyal and committed to the people and relationships that matter to us, standing by others through difficulty without abandoning ourselves.

  3. Mutual Support
Gives and receives help, encouragement, and care while respecting the needs, capabilities, and autonomy of everyone involved.

  4. Connection
Creates meaningful relationships based on trust, reciprocity, empathy, and genuine concern while maintaining a healthy sense of self.

Reversed (Dysfunctional)
Theme: Dependent
  1. People-Pleasing
Becomes preoccupied with gaining approval and maintaining connection, continually adjusting ourselves to meet the perceived needs and expectations of others.

  2. Over-Responsibility
Feels responsible for other people’s feelings, problems, and choices, stepping in to rescue, fix, or enable them even when doing so is harmful.

  3. Lack of Boundaries
Becomes so involved in the needs and lives of others that the distinction between what belongs to us and what belongs to them becomes blurred.

  4. Dependency
Relies heavily on relationships for security, identity, and self-worth, creating fear of rejection or abandonment and difficulty functioning independently.
