Everything I relied upon has stopped giving me meaning.
The Dark Night carries the capacity for purging. In its functional expression, it releases beliefs, attachments, identities, and patterns that no longer serve us, creating space for something more authentic to emerge. When distorted, it can express itself as despair. In this form, it becomes consumed by hopelessness and existential suffering, losing sight of meaning, purpose, or the possibility that circumstances can change.
When this card comes up in a reading...
The Dark Night may be pointing to a need for surrender, or revealing where despair has taken over. It invites us to consider whether we are allowing an old way of being to fall away, or becoming so consumed by the darkness that we can no longer imagine movement, meaning, or possibility.
Purging
Releases beliefs, attachments, identities, and patterns that no longer serve us, creating space for something more authentic to emerge.Surrender
Lets go of the need to control or understand what is happening, allowing old ways of being to fall away rather than continually trying to restore what was.Allowing
Allows heaviness, darkness, emptiness, or despair to be present without resisting it or trying to force ourselves into a different state, giving the experience space to move through us in its own time.Detachment
Loosens our identification with roles, beliefs, expectations, and outcomes, allowing us to experience ourselves beyond the structures that previously defined us.
Despair
Becomes consumed by hopelessness and existential suffering, losing sight of meaning, purpose, or the possibility that circumstances can change.Isolation
Withdraws into our suffering and becomes increasingly disconnected from others, reinforcing the sense that we are alone, misunderstood, or beyond help.Stagnation
Becomes so overwhelmed by inner darkness that movement feels impossible, leaving us unable to make decisions, take action, or imagine a way forward.Cynicism
Begins to see life through the lens of our despair, dismissing hope, meaning, or possibilities for change as unrealistic or futile.
